Banks
We call it bankruptcy when a person is overburdened with debt and can't pay it. When the same is true of banks, can we call it bankrupture?

X-mas Music Defense System
I was out running some errands earlier today and flipped on the radio to listen to some tunes. To my dismay it was pretty much all Christmas music and I decided I would rather gouge my ears out rather than hear "Jingle Bell Rock" on more time. That got me wondering though, about what it is that bothers me so much about Christmas music. I was pretty sure that it was more than just the fact that I have been hearing these same melodies over and over for my entire life.

After a little bit of introspection I decided that what I really don't like about the Christmas music I hear all the time is that it is devoid of emotional texture and variation. The music makes me feel as if everyone has decided to only experience a tiny range of shallow emotions and thoughts during this time of year.

Of course, the idea that we are so emotionally shallow during this time of year is absolute bunk. Personally, I have been going through quite a few serious changes in the last couple of weeks and experiencing tons of emotional texture. So, I decided that instead of throwing my hands up and giving up on X-mas music, and I would put together and Xmas Music Defense System, a mix CD with music about X-mas time that has the encompasses more of what I feel about this time of year and kinds of up, ups, down, downs, left right, left rights that I have been experiencing this season. It a kind of anti-"X-mas music", X-mas music mix tape.

If you're interested, here is what I came up with:
Danny elfman - The nightmare before christmas - Evil theme (1:33)
Dead Kennedys - Advice From Christmas Past (0:55)
Invader Zim - Jolly Boots of Doom
Monty Python - Christmas in Heaven (2:46)
Sheep in the Big City - Clearance Day (1:18)
Ronan Keating feat. Moira Brennan - Fairytale of New York (4:45)
New Found Glory - Ex Miss (3:38)
Something Corporate - Forget December (3:10)
The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) (3:35)
Snow Patrol - When I Get Home for Christmas (4:16)
Death Cab for Cutie - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (3:05)
Dashboard Confessional - The Only Gift That I Need (2:12)
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (4:35)
beatles - i saw mommy kissing santa (2:10)
Dynamix II - Jingle Bass (1:53)
Slade - Merry X-Mas Everybody (3:44)
John Digweed - 03 Joy To The World (No Felt Mix) - T Tauri (4:35)

Zombie LAN
My sources tell me that the Zombie Apocalypse is going to hit Livermore CA
on Friday evening and lay siege to it for the entire weekend. Thankfully
we have been preparing for this dark day for quite some time now. I have
set up a safe house and loaded it up with all sorts of ammo and medical
supplies. At this point we're prepared as we're ever going to be, but we
still need a few more troops to stave off their masses. Would you care to
throw in your lot with us for the coming apocalypse?

Latest prop 8 poll
The Public Policy Institute of CA released another prop 8 poll last night. This one has 44% in favor of prop 8, 52% against, 4% undecided with a MOE of 3%. There has been quite a turnaround in the past couple of weeks as the TV ads have been fighting it out, but it looks like we now have a pretty good chance of batting this thing down.

I'm still a little worried though, the period of time that this poll was conducted is similar to the period of the last SurveyUSA poll that showed prop 8 winning by +3. This is probably due to the different polling outfits using different methodologies, and in absence of knowledge about which is better, it's tough to decide which is right. Probably the safest approach is to just average the polls and use that result which comes out to prop 8 losing by 2.5 points, which is definitely a nail biter.

The http://www.noonprop8.com folks are still fighting though and have released a new TV ad. That may pull a few more undecideds our way.

prop 8 polling
The latest poll for CA prop 8 is out and it looks like things have improved:
http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=0d4fd538-5834-4c18-98c8-6e58da254976

Prop 8 is polling to win 48% to 45% with 7% undecided and a 4% MOE. It looks like this is going to be a nail biter, but we definately have a shot at knocking this thing down.

If you feel that you have the resources to help check out this website:
http://www.noonprop8.com/

It would be best to do so quickly while there are still so many undecideds floating around. Personally, I'm planning to make my final donation tommorow with 2 weeks left till the election. Still, there is plenty of room for donations of both time and money.

CA Prop 8
I've been following the polls for the anti-gay marriage prop for some time now. I was happy to stand by and watch as the prop was polling to lose by about 10 points. Unfortunately, the religious right wing in CA has recently started pouring money into passing prop 8 and it shows. The tables have turned and now it's polling to pass by 5 points.

I don't post here often because I don't usually have anything I want to say with a megaphone blaring across the internet. Today I have something to say. Today I want to shout from my rooftop and have my cries heard from the mountaintops of Yreka to the shores of San Diego. I want to yell at the top of my lungs that passing this thing is so wrong on so many levels, and that the people we are about to let this happen to are our neighbors, friends, and coworkers. But most of all, I want to scream: WE CANNOT LET THIS PASS!

For too long we have let previous generations and large organizations run the system without our input. For too long we have stood on the sidelines as they have dominated the game with high voter turnouts and piles of cash. For too long we have despaired about how little influence we have and cynically walked away from the voting booths. Now is the time to say, NOT me, NOT this time, my voice will NOT be a whisper in the dying night.

I want to make an impassioned plea to all of you to fight this with every resource you can muster. Elections are of course won with votes, but those votes are influenced by media, money and volunteer work. I assume that most of you plan to vote, but I urge all of you to take it a step further. Get on your megaphone and spread the word, and consider donating money or time or both to the cause (http://www.noonprop8.com/). We have the means to make an impact on this race if we are just willing to act.

LAN Party
Just a reminder to gamers out there. We're holding a LAN party at my place starting Friday evening and running through Sunday evening. I'll probably fire up the grill on Saturday, so tasty meats would be much appreciated.

9 Citations?!
Today I was updating my publication list using Google Scholar, and I was surprised to find that first journal article has picked up 9 citations so far! I kinda figured that it fell into a black hole to never be seen again, but I guess not:

Dinged a lvl in climbing
After making slow progres for the past year or so I finally nailed my first 5.11 climb in my gym tonight! I feel like I'm on top of the world, or at least the wall :).

Unfortunately, I managed to pull on my thumb wrong in the climb after that. I'll see how it feels in the morning, but hopefully the injury isn't bad.

Current Mood: excited

A note for all of the C++ programmers...
I just grabbed the latest version of the EasyEclipse C++ IDE, and it's great! Previous versions have had half working implementations of a lot of the great time saving features like code completion, code folding, editor linking to class and method definitions, and SVN integration. This release fixed all of the broken stuff that I was running into and even prettied up the UI a bit to boot. At this point I would recommend the IDE to anyone working on a large C++ project and looking for a decent free environment to work in.

CO2 Emissions and PG&E
This entry is for those of you who have been thinking about global climate change, and wondering if there is anything easy you can do to fight such a large problem. A couple of days ago PG&E launched an interesting new greenhouse gas reduction program called ClimateSmart. The great thing about this program is that aside from a few extra bucks a month on your energy bill, it has little to no impact on your life.

Here is basically how it works. Anyone in the area can elect to have PG&E charge them a little extra for each KWh of electricity and therm of natural gas. That little bit extra every month is pooled with everyone else's money and used to fund greenhouse gas reduction programs such as tree planting (trees soak up CO2), and alternative energy production. They will theoretically adjust the cost of the energy you buy so that they will have enough money to capture as much CO2 as was produced in the energy you used, thereby making your electricity and natural gas usage carbon neutral. I just signed up for it and for my energy usage this ran about $3.50 extra a month.

You can find out more about this program at the following website.
